This document summarizes an investigation into the effects of fibre volume fraction on glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) plates. It describes how composite plates with different fibre volume fractions (Vf) of chopped strand mat E-glass fibre and unsaturated polyester resin were prepared and tested. The mechanical properties of the composites were evaluated both analytically using rule of mixture and modified rule of mixture models, and experimentally via tensile testing. The results showed that the mechanical properties, such as strength and modulus of elasticity, improved with increasing Vf, up to an optimal point where further increases in Vf led to degradation in properties.
